Blackshear, Georgia - Mr. Jimmy R Farquhar, 96, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at Satilla Bluffs Senior Care in Blackshear, Georgia. He was born December 30,1928 in Hill County Texas to the late Tommie D. Farquhar and Lessie Lee Goodlett Farquhar.
He attended grade school through high school in Hillsboro, Texas. Farquhar had a lifelong enthusiasm for sports as a participant and a spectator. While at Hillsboro Junior College and Austin College in Sherman, Texas he played varsity basketball and baseball.
In 1951, Farquhar began his career with the Oklahoma, Gas and Electric Company serving cities throughout Oklahoma for over 35 years. He retired in 1987 as a District Manager for OG&E.
One of his hobbies and passions was playing tenor banjo. He loved to play Dixieland, Jazz and Ragtime music of the 1920's and 1930's. Jimmy was a member of several "Banjo Bands", including Sapulpa Banjo Band, Ragtime Rascals of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma and River Rascals Banjo Band of Rome, Georgia.
He served as a board member of Fretted Instruments Guild of America. Farquhar was an advocate of promoting banjo music across the United States. He was inducted into the Banjo Hall of Fame on May 4, 2012.
An avid storyteller, you could always find him in the rocking chairs on the porch at "The Bluffs" ready to spin a tale. He was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Beth Monroe Farquhar, his brothers W. Goodlett Farquhar, Darwin Farquhar and sister Martha Farquhar Daughtery.
He is survived by his daughter Sally Farquhar Tillapaugh and his son-in-law John Tillapaugh of St Simons Island, Georgia.
A memorial service will be held Monday (December 8, 2025) at 10:00am in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Satilla Bluffs Senior Care Center for a reception of fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hearth Hospice of Brunswick or American Heart Association.
