Vergie's Story

Vergie Courtney of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma was born to Ellis and Ruby (Jones) Baker on September 15, 1926 and passed from this life on January 7, 2018 in Duncan, Oklahoma at the age of 91 years.
Vergie grew up with 10 brothers and sisters and attended school at Joy and Iona. She married St. Elmo Weaver in Wynnewood, Oklahoma in 1936 and they had six children. In 1960 she married Robert (Bill) Courtney and they lived in Paoli, Oklahoma (he affectionately called her "Puddin").
Vergie was a wonderful mother, cook, homemaker and farmer, and eventually began caring for and serving the elderly (she retired at age 80!). She loved working outside in the fields/crops, gardening, taking care of the chickens and the farm animals, sewing and quilting, but most importantly, she was a devoted Christian and dedicated to ministry.
Mrs. Courtney is survived by her sons - Junior Weaver and wife Michelle of Kingston, Oklahoma, and James Weaver and wife Katie of Ft. Worth, Texas; daughters - Linda McGowen and husband Sidney of Talala, Oklahoma, Brenda Petty of Duncan, Oklahoma, and Pam Taylor and husband Gary of Mustang, Oklahoma; brother, Calvin Baker of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister, Georgia Wilson of Maysville, Oklahoma; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a host of great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Courtney was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bill) Courtney; daughter Barbara Whatley; parents Ellis and Ruby Baker; and grandson Dwayne Whatley.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2018 in the Wooster Funeral Home Chapel with her grandson, Jeremy Petty, officiating.
