Sibyl's Story

Text size

Sibyl Carlene Suggs, 85, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on April 20, 2017. While with us, she was an extraordinarily loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She lived an active life and loved playing golf, bowling, and tennis. She was the ultimate host and nurturer whether it be making others feel welcome in her home, her incredible skills in the kitchen or her love of a beautifully-cultivated garden. She had a servant's heart, and her first priority was taking care of those she loved.
Carlene was born in Davenport, Oklahoma on November 7, 1931 to Carl and Sibyl Bracksieck. She went to school through her sophomore year in Davenport where she was active in Rainbow Girls and school plays, was a majorette in the high school band, and played on the basketball team.
She moved to Pauls Valley in 1947 where she participated in school plays and trained to be a Southwestern Bell telephone operator graduating from Pauls Valley High School two years later.
Carlene married Jerry R. Suggs on July 6, 1950 at the First Baptist Church in Pauls Valley and moved to Harlan, Kentucky and then to Norfolk, Virginia. She returned to Pauls Valley in 1951 for the birth of her first son and later moved to Riverside, California for a short time while Jerry was finishing his Air Force duty.
In 1953, Carlene became a member of the First Baptist Church where she has since maintained her membership serving in many capacities including teaching in the second-grade Sunday School Department for 38 years and helping with Vacation Bible School, children's church and children's choirs. She has served as a greeter and helped in the mail ministry by mailing out cards to the sick. More recently, Carlene enjoyed working with the J-Life and Teen Kids youth programs.
Carlene has two sons, Jerry Ray Suggs Jr. and Stephen Mark Suggs, and was an active Den Mother and PTA member for 12 years.
Carlene was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Sibyl Bracksieck; her brother Carl David Bracksieck; and brother-in-law James Copeland.
Surviving family include her husband, Jerry of Pauls Valley; sister Donna Marlene Hall and husband Bruce of McAlester; sister Sheila Copeland of Edmond, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Becky Bracksieck of Pauls Valley; sons Jerry Ray Suggs Jr. and wife Susan of Chandler, Texas, and Stephen Mark Suggs and his wife Cathleen of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren: Blake Suggs and wife Paige of Dorset, Vermont, Andrew Suggs of Ft. Worth, Texas, Stevi Russell and husband Joe of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Cody Suggs and wife Ashley of Haltom City, Texas; 3 great-grandchildren as well as a host of special nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to First Baptist Church, Pauls Valley.
Memorial services are scheduled for April 27, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Pauls Valley. We invite you to send a message of condolence and view the family's guestbook at www.stufflebeanfuneralhome.com.
