Paula's Story

Paula Jean Paula Gross age 94, formerly of Galveston went home to be with her Lord Monday, October 3, 2016 while at the Hospice of Brazos Valley in Bryan, Texas. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00pm until 8:00pm Friday, October 7, 2016 at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston. Graveside services are 10:00 am Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock. Texas, Reverend Ted Duck officiating.

Paula was born August 19, 1922 to Guy and Lena Blankenship in Garvin County, Oklahoma. She attended Central State College in Edmund, Oklahoma and later graduated from the University of Houston. She taught third grade for Galveston Independent School district for 40 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Galveston for many years, more recently she belonged to First Baptist Church in Bryan and their Eunice Sunday School Class. She was a past president and "silver sister" of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary teacher's sorority. She had been a longtime member and past president of Galveston's Pilot Club, an international service organization.

Paula married Wiley Gross of Paoli, Oklahoma on the day before Pearl Harbor in 1941 and they were married for 57 years. He preceded her in death as did their son, Terry D. Gross. She was also preceded in death by five siblings: Ruby Jones, Ruth (Mrs. Walter) Thompson, Howard Blankenship, Milas Blankenship and Barney Blankenship.

She is survived by a nephew, Jack Blankenship, of Santa Fe, Texas, and by five nieces: Dr. Kathryn Thompson Presley of Bryan, Mrs. Norma Stanich of Texas City, Texas, Mrs. Sandra Trapani of League City, Texas, Mrs. Fuchsia Nelson of Santa Fe, Texas, and Mrs. Martha Spencer of Louisville, Kentucky.
