Martha Lou Oliver Fleming, 84, was born in Vernon, Texas on July 3, 1932, one day before her mother's birthday, and passed away peacefully on June 16, 2017.
Her parents lived in an oil boom town, across the road from the Wagner Ranch. Martha's dad worked in the oil fields around Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and New Mexico which is why she went to more than 10 schools.
In the late 1940s they settled in Pauls Valley, Okla., so she and her brother could finish high school. Martha graduated from Pauls Valley High School in 1950.
On Easter Sunday, a young man (later her husband) invited Martha and some friends to make a swimming trip to Turner Falls. Martha accepted and in August 1950, she and Ray Fleming were married in the Methodist Church in Vernon, Texas, ahead of Ray's recall to active military in the Korean War.
They lived in Louisiana and Kansas before Ray left for Japan and Korea. On his return, they lived in Pauls Valley and Tulsa, where she was active in the Methodist Church youth and mission programs.
Later they moved to Houston, Texas and were early residents of Kingwood, where they were charter members of the Kingwood Country Club and founding members of the Kingwood United Methodist Church. Martha was active in youth and mission programs and the Society of ST Stephen, where she worked until her health no longer allowed.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren, making trips to Lakeview Methodist Assembly and square dancing from a young age. She is cancer survivor and a snake bite survivor.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Ray; and a brother and sister in law, Max and Nancy Oliver; 2 children, Esther and Keith; and 6 grandchildren: Tiffany, Jana, Taylor, Brenna, Averie and Ray II; great grandchildren Aubrie, Emily, Riley, Oliver, Ella, Luke and Finley, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
As a final tribute, Martha donated her body to Genesis and Methodist/Baptist facility. Her funeral will be held at Kingwood United Methodist Church in Kingwood, Texas on Saturday, June 24 at 11 a.m.
