LaVerne Grissom of Pauls Valley passed away December 2, 2016 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma at the age of 95 years.
LaVerne was born September 25, 1921 in Ardmore, Oklahoma to Warnie M. and Orpha Belle (Cox) Montgomery.
Laverne was raised near Ardmore in the Hoxbar community. She attended school there until her senior year when she and her family moved to Pauls Valley. She is a 1938 graduate of Pauls Valley High School. After high school, she furthered her education by attending East Central University in Ada.
She was married to Pasquale "Pat" H. Grissom in Ardmore, Oklahoma on May 4, 1941. She and Pat were blessed with two daughters, Susan and LaVona.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pauls Valley where she was involved in many activities including teaching Sunday School as well as a sponsor going to Falls Creek. She was also active helping others as a volunteer at the Pauls Valley General Hospital, the Garvin County Election Board and was a reading mentor at Jackson Elementary School.
She worked in the early 1950s for Judge Gilmer Long in the County Attorney's Office. During that time, she was active in the Business and Professional Women's Association including the Bloomer Girls Basketball Team.
While her children were in school she enjoyed the activities of a 'stay at home mom' by being a homeroom mom at school, as well as being active in the P.T.A. and Moms Club. Later, she worked as a secretary at the junior and senior high schools for about 10 years.
Pauls Valley has been her home since 1938.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Warnie M. and Orpha Belle Montgomery; her husband, Pasquale "Pat" H. Grissom; brother, Harold Montgomery; sisters, Wilda Pearson and Iva Jo Zurmehly; and son-in-law, Jessie Clark.
Her surviving family include her two daughters - Susan Clark of Wynnewood, and LaVona Grissom and Ed Webster of Pauls Valley; four grandchildren - Alan Beaty and Lynne Aaron, Brent Beaty, Misty Clark and husband Martin Leslie, and Shelly Esparza and husband Greg; nine great grandchildren - Cody Beaty, Jake Beaty, Zach Beaty, Nick Beaty, Brayden Demonia, Nicklaus Esparza, Lukas Esparza, Cody Leslie and Kasey Leslie; one great-great grandson, Porter Beaty; two brothers in law, Lloyd Pearson and Charles Zurmehly; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, and other relatives.
Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Cemetery Pavilion officiated by Rev. Jim Dehart.
