J.L. Courtney, 71, died December 1, 2016. He was born June 2, 1945 in Pauls Valley, Okla., to Boyd and Ruby (Fears) Courtney.
He graduated from Pauls Valley High School in 1963 and received his bachelor's from Central State University. He retired as a parole administrator with the Office of Juvenile Affairs.
He loved researching the history of the state of Oklahoma, the Chisolm Trail and Great Western Trail. He enjoyed filming football games, basketball games, parades and weddings, and loved traveling, photography, and gardening. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends. He was a longtime member of Village Baptist Church where he and Elaine taught 5th grade Sunday school for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Janice.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Elaine; daughter, Marcy Collister and husband Brent; brothers Ralph Courtney and wife Barbara, and Woody Courtney; sister, Loretta Owens and husband Glen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be Tuesday, December 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Village Baptist Church, 10600 N. May Avenue, Oklahoma City. To share a memory or condolence, visit www.mercer-adams.com
