Emmitt's Story

Emmitt Barney "E.B." Byrd, 85, was born near Davis, Okla., in the Woodland community to Emmitt and Ester Lee (Wells) Byrd on April 9, 1931. Surrounded by his family, E.B. passed this life February 11, 2017.
E.B. was raised in the Woodland, Chigley and Joy communities. In 1948 E.B. enlisted in the United States Army. He served on Okinawa with an infantry unit as a transport officer and was honorably discharged in 1953.
On July 9, 1955, he married Dorothy Wadley in Gainesville, Texas. The couple made their home in Pauls Valley and together raised 3 children - Barry, Gary and Kari.
He loved family camping trips and traveling, boating and fishing. E.B. taught a number of kids and adults how to water ski and was mentor to many couples who were new to camping.
Anyone who knew E.B. knew he loved to make people laugh. He was quite the jokester and could capture any audience with his story telling. E.B. was an avid O.U. sports fan and he loved to hate the Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed watching his boys play baseball and traveled many miles to watch Lindsey and Ashley play softball.
E.B. and Dorothy were members of the Wheeler Dealer Square Dance Club and the Squirrely Sam's Camping Club. While with the Squirrely Sam's club E.B. assisted with the building of the pavilion and the restoration of the campsites at the Pauls Valley City Lake.
E.B. worked for Rainbo Bread Company for 25 years retiring in 1986. Following his retirement, he and Dorothy spent many years traveling the United States. He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, Pauls Valley.
E.B. was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy of 60 years on April 30, 2016; parents, Emmitt and Ester Lee Byrd; grandparents Barney and Dora Wells; 3 brothers - William Newton, Donald Byrd and Cleo Byrd; and 4 sisters - Joneta Byrd, Lurana Pierce, Lucille Sanders and Betty Pruitt.
His survivors include his children Barry Byrd and Darlene of Duncan, Gary Byrd and Paula of Princeton, Texas, and Kari Whitefield and Troy of Pauls Valley; grandchildren Keith Byrd of San Antonio, Texas, Lindsey Carson and Chris of Pauls Valley, Matthew Byrd, Princeton, Texas, Ashley Feathers and Chad of Pauls Valley, Emily Byrd and fiancé Drew Hodges of San Antonio, Meagan Byrd, Princeton, Texas, and Jordan Byrd of Norman; and 9 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother Junior Byrd and his wife Helen, and sister Bonnie Brown; sisters-in-law Ouida Duckworth, Neva Owens, Eddie Kelley and Debbie Wadley as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 2 p.m.at Stufflebean-Coffey Chapel of Remembrance officiated by Pastor Dwayne Johnson. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Pauls Valley. Professional services and interment are under the direction of the Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Barry Byrd, Keith Byrd, Troy Whitefield, Chris Carson, Chad Feathers and Drew Hodges. Honorary pallbearers are Sherwood Eastman, Bob Alexander, Grant Beam, Tommy Estes, Joe Don Looney, Kirk Moore, Johnny Hillin, Danny Driskill and Wendell Chitwood.
