Arthur Glen McCaleb was born on February 11, 1925 in Whitebead, Oklahoma to Tom and Laura (Pennington) McCaleb. When he was 5 years old he moved with his parents and older siblings to Wallville, Oklahoma.
He lived in the Wallville and Hughes areas the rest of his life, Except for time working away from home, time spent in military, and time spent in the nursing home.
Arthur passed away at Norman, Oklahoma on August 9, 2019 at the age of 94 years, five months and 28 days.
Arthur attended and graduated from Hughes High School. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, where he spent 17 months on the islands of Iwa Jima and Saipan.
He was a people-loving person and never met a stranger. Arthur was very community oriented and looked for ways to help others. He was instrumental in getting rural telephone services and the rural water service to the Wallville and Hughes areas. Arthur also served on the Hughes school board.
For the last 35 years of his working career, he worked for the Rural Electric Cooperative in Lindsay, Oklahoma.
Arthur had many hobbies. He loved bluegrass music and had a band, "The Bluegrass Woodcutters," for many years. Arthur was an accomplished musician and could play any stringed instrument with ease and greatness.
He enjoyed doing arts and crafts and was a master craftsman in woodwork projects. Arthur also enjoyed mowing the lawn and working in the yard while he watched the squirrels scamper up the trees and listened to the rooster crow. He loved his animals and throughout the years he had dogs, cats, chickens, pigeons, and rabbits.
But one of Arthur's greatest enjoyments was watching his children participate in various sports.
Arthur was an active member of the Banner Baptist Church as long as his health permitted. He dearly loved church and his church family.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Jonnie Ann McCaleb of the home; two sons - R.C. McCaleb and wife LaDale of Lindsay, Oklahoma, and Herbert McCaleb and wife Sherri of Maysville, Oklahoma; three daughters - Judy Holden and husband Kenneth of Lindsay, Oklahoma, Carol Burch of Maysville, Oklahoma, and Gayla Dean of Lindsay, Oklahoma; three stepsons - Stanley Work and Jerry Work of Lindsay, Oklahoma, and Kenneth Work and wife Faye of Elmore City, Oklahoma; 13 grandchildren - Kenneth Dale McCaleb and wife Merry of Wayne, Oklahoma, Donnie McCaleb and wife Kim of Tulsa, Oklahoma, David McCaleb of Maysville, Oklahoma, Robby Arnold and wife Melissa of La Porte, Texas, Kristi Edelman and husband Kraig of Purcell, Oklahoma, Kim Kraft of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, Torie Townley and husband Rodney of Maysville, Oklahoma, Michael Holden and wife Sheila of Lindsay, Oklahoma, Mindi Smith and husband Jeff of Amber, Oklahoma, Laura Fisher and husband Harvey of Wayne, Oklahoma, Lindsay Brown and husband Wes of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Tiffani Shebester and husband Travis of Lindsay, Oklahoma, and Tracy Nunley and husband Destry of Lindsay, Oklahoma; 43 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Laura (Pennington) McCaleb; his first wife, Rosemary (Cox) McCaleb; two sons, Billy Glen McCaleb and Robert Lewis McCaleb; six brothers - Lowell and wife Minnie, Clyde and wife Ruth, Lindsay and wife Ann Leslie and wife Juanita, Ray and wife Bernice, and an infant brother; one sister, Emma McCaleb High and husband Foy; two sons-in-law, Chester Dean and K.L. Burch; one grandson, Joe Douglas Arnold; and one great-great-granddaughter, McKenzie Arnold.
A funeral service to honor Arthur's life was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at Banner Baptist Church in Lindsay, Oklahoma. Following the service, he was laid to rest at Green Hill Cemetery in Lindsay, Oklahoma.
